Job PurposeThe Quality Engineer will be responsible for ensuring that incoming materials, in-process manufacturing activities and finished products comply with approved drawings, specifications, quality standards and customer requirements.

The position requires strong practical knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, heavy fabrication, MS, SS and GI materials, welding processes, dimensional inspection, surface preparation, powder coating and painting processes.

The candidate should be capable of independently handling quality inspection activities on the shop floor and coordinating with Design, Production, Purchase, Stores, Projects and Service departments for timely resolution of quality issues.

  • 3. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Incoming Material InspectionInspect incoming raw materials and bought-out items as per approved specifications and purchase requirements.
  • Verify material grade, thickness, dimensions, quantity and physical condition.
  • Check MS, SS and GI sheets, plates, sections, pipes, structural materials and fabricated components.
  • Verify material test certificates (MTC), certificates of conformity and other quality documents wherever applicable.
  • Identify and report non-conforming materials.
  • Coordinate with Stores and Purchase for segregation, rejection or replacement of defective materials.
  • B. Sheet Metal Quality InspectionInspect sheet metal components as per approved drawings and specifications.
  • Check:

  • Sheet thickness
  • Length and width
  • Bend dimensions
  • Hole position and diameter
  • Flatness
  • Squareness
  • Alignment
  • Overall dimensions
  • Inspect components manufactured through cutting, bending, shearing, punching and other fabrication processes.
  • Ensure proper identification and traceability of components.
  • Verify dimensional accuracy using measuring instruments.
  • C. Heavy Fabrication InspectionInspect fabricated structures, frames, tanks, platforms, ducts, booths, ovens, pipelines and other heavy fabrication components.
  • Verify fabrication as per approved drawings and project specifications.
  • Check dimensions, alignment, level, squareness, fit-up and welding quality.
  • Conduct stage-wise inspection during fabrication.
  • Identify deviations and coordinate with Production for corrective action.
  • D. Welding Quality InspectionMonitor welding activities and ensure compliance with approved drawings, welding procedures and quality requirements.
  • Inspect:

  • Weld size
  • Weld length
  • Weld appearance
  • Weld continuity
  • Joint preparation
  • Fit-up
  • Distortion
  • Undercut
  • Porosity
  • Cracks
  • Spatter
  • Ensure proper electrode / filler wire selection as per applicable requirements.
  • Verify welding parameters where applicable.
  • Coordinate for rectification of defective welds.
  • Maintain welding inspection records.
  • Knowledge of MIG/MAG, TIG and Arc/Manual welding processes will be preferred.
  • Knowledge of NDT such as DPT, MPI, UT and visual inspection will be an added advantage.
  • E. Surface Preparation & Painting InspectionInspect surface preparation before painting/coating.
  • Verify removal of:

  • Oil and grease
  • Rust
  • Scale
  • Dust
  • Welding spatter
  • Other contaminants
  • Check surface cleanliness and preparation as per specified requirements.
  • Inspect primer and paint application.
  • Check:

  • Paint type
  • Mixing ratio
  • Coating thickness
  • Surface finish
  • Colour
  • Adhesion
  • Coverage
  • Drying/curing
  • Monitor painting quality and identify defects such as sagging, runs, pinholes, blistering, peeling, uneven coating and poor finish.
  • F. Powder Coating InspectionInspect components before powder coating.
  • Verify proper cleaning and surface preparation.
  • Monitor powder coating process parameters.
  • Check:

  • Powder type and colour
  • Coating thickness
  • Surface finish
  • Colour consistency
  • Curing condition
  • Adhesion
  • Coverage
  • Identify defects such as orange peel, pinholes, uneven coating, contamination, scratches and poor adhesion.
  • Maintain powder coating inspection records.
  • G. Dimensional & Final InspectionConduct final inspection of completed products as per approved drawings and inspection plans.
  • Verify critical dimensions and tolerances.
  • Use appropriate measuring instruments such as:

  • Vernier Caliper
  • Micrometer
  • Height Gauge
  • Measuring Tape
  • Welding Gauge
  • Surface Roughness / DFT Gauge, wherever applicable
  • Other inspection instruments
  • Prepare inspection reports and maintain quality records.
  • Ensure products are released only after satisfactory inspection.
  • H. Quality DocumentationPrepare and maintain:

  • Incoming Inspection Reports
  • In-Process Inspection Reports
  • Final Inspection Reports
  • Non-Conformance Reports (NCR)
  • Corrective Action Reports
  • Inspection Checklists
  • Material Inspection Records
  • Welding Inspection Records
  • Painting / Powder Coating Inspection Records
  • Customer Inspection Reports
  • Maintain proper traceability of inspection records.
  • Support preparation and maintenance of Quality Control Plans and Inspection & Test Plans (ITP).
  • I. Non-Conformance & Corrective ActionIdentify quality deviations and raise NCRs where required.
  • Analyze root causes of quality problems.
  • Coordinate with Production and other concerned departments for corrective and preventive actions.
  • Follow up on corrective actions until closure.
  • Implement measures to prevent recurrence of quality issues.
  • J. Drawing & Specification VerificationRead and understand engineering drawings, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings and specifications.
  • Verify dimensions, tolerances, material specifications and fabrication requirements.
  • Coordinate with the Design & Engineering department regarding drawing-related quality issues.
  • Identify discrepancies between drawings and actual manufacturing.
  • K. ISO / Quality Management SystemFollow company Quality Management System procedures.
  • Support implementation of ISO 9001 requirements.
  • Maintain quality records as per documented procedures.
  • Participate in internal audits and external/customer audits.
  • Ensure proper implementation of inspection procedures on the shop floor.
  • Support continuous improvement activities related to quality.
  • L. Customer & Third-Party InspectionCoordinate customer inspection and third-party inspection activities.
  • Prepare required inspection documents and reports.
  • Support customer visits and inspection activities.
  • Ensure customer quality requirements are properly communicated to Production and other concerned departments.
  • Handle quality-related observations and ensure timely closure.

5. Educational QualificationEssential:

  • Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 2–5 years of relevant experience in manufacturing / fabrication quality.

Preferred:

  • Certification or training in welding inspection, NDT, painting/coating inspection or quality management.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 and quality management systems.

9. Authority & ResponsibilityThe Quality Engineer shall have authority to:

  • Stop or hold a production activity when a major quality deviation is identified.
  • Reject non-conforming material/components as per company procedure.
  • Raise NCRs for quality deviations.
  • Recommend rework, repair or rejection of defective components.
  • Release components/products after satisfactory inspection.
  • Escalate critical quality issues to the Manager – Quality / Management.
  • Recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • 10. Working ConditionsPrimarily shop-floor and manufacturing environment.
  • Regular interaction with Production, Design, Stores, Purchase, Projects and Service teams.
  • May require inspection at customer/project locations.
  • Must be willing to work according to production and project requirements.
  • Strict adherence to company HSE, quality and safety procedures is mandatory.

11. Candidate ProfileThe ideal candidate should be a hands-on Quality Engineer with practical shop-floor experience in sheet metal and heavy fabrication manufacturing, with strong knowledge of MS, SS and GI materials, welding, dimensional inspection, painting and powder coating.

Candidates who have worked in painting/coating equipment manufacturing or a similar engineering fabrication industry will be given preference.

Experience in the same industry is strongly preferred.
