Job Description

Bovine Veterinary Doctor

A bovine veterinary doctor is responsible for herd health, clinic operations, and farm safety. They manage hospital wards, coordinate strict hygiene protocols, track medical inventory, and run systematic preventative care programs.

Key Responsibilities

Ward & Facility Management

·        Maintain hygiene across all calf, maternity, sick-bay, and isolation wards.

·        Implement strict daily sanitisation schedules to prevent cross-contamination.

·        Supervise the disposal of medical waste and contaminated bedding safely.

·        Monitor ventilation, bedding quality, and temperature in each ward.

·        Separate infectious cows immediately into designated quarantine zones.

 

Medical Inventory Control

·        Manage stock levels of vaccines, antibiotics, anaesthetics, and supplements.

·        Track expiration dates to ensure all medications are potent.

·        Order emergency medical supplies before stock reaches critical levels.

·        Record the use of all controlled substances accurately.

·        Audit storage temperatures for temperature-sensitive biological products daily.

 

Preventative Health & Vaccination

·        Design comprehensive vaccination schedules for different age groups.

·        Coordinate routine deworming and parasite control protocols seasonally.

·        Administer core vaccines for anthrax, brucellosis, and haemorrhagic septicaemia.

·        Maintain digital health cards for every cow in the herd.

·        Monitor the withdrawal periods of medicines to ensure food safety.

 

Clinical & Reproductive Care

·        Diagnose illnesses, injuries, and metabolic disorders in cattle.

·        Perform emergency surgeries including caesareans and displaced abomasum corrections.

·        Conduct regular pregnancy checks using ultrasound or rectal palpation.

·        Assist in difficult calvings to minimize calf and dam mortality.

·        Train farm staff on early symptom recognition and biosecurity.

 

Qualifications & Requirements

·        Education: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree.

·        Licensing: Valid registration with the relevant Veterinary Council.

·        Experience: Proven track record in dairy farm or large animal clinic management.

·        Skills: Strong organization for inventory, scheduling, and hygiene tracking.

·        Stamina: Ability to handle heavy livestock and work in farm environments.
