JOB DESCRIPTIONSITE MECHANIC / PLANT & MACHINERY MECHANICDepartment: Plant & Machinery
Location: Construction Site
Reporting To: Plant & Machinery Incharge / Project Manager
Job PurposeThe Site Mechanic shall be responsible for the inspection, preventive maintenance, servicing, troubleshooting, repair, and proper upkeep of all construction plant, machinery, equipment, and vehicles deployed at site. The objective is to ensure maximum machine availability, minimum breakdown time, safe operation, and timely maintenance of all equipment.
- Key ResponsibilitiesCarry out daily inspection of all plant, machinery, and vehicles before commencement of work.
- Maintain and repair equipment including, but not limited to:
- Transit Mixers
- Dumpers / Tippers
- JCB / Backhoe Loader
- Excavator / Poclain
- Wheel Loader
- Hydra / Crane
- Concrete Pumps
- Batching Plant
- DG Sets
- Compressors
- Dewatering Pumps
- Site Cars / Pick-up Vehicles
- Other mechanical equipment deployed at site.
- Attend all machine and vehicle breakdowns immediately and restore equipment to working condition at the earliest possible time.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance including:
- Engine oil replacement
- Filter replacement
- Gear oil and hydraulic oil checks
- Greasing and lubrication
- Coolant inspection
- Battery maintenance
- Brake inspection
- Tyre inspection
- Belt and hose inspection
- Hydraulic system inspection.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, engine, transmission, brake, steering, and fuel-system related faults.
- Maintain a Preventive Maintenance Schedule for every machine and vehicle based on running hours, kilometres, and manufacturer recommendations.
- Maintain daily records of:
- Machine running hours
- Vehicle kilometres
- Breakdown details
- Repairs undertaken
- Spare parts replaced
- Oil and lubricant consumption
- Next service due date.
- Ensure that no machine overdue for critical servicing or having an unsafe mechanical defect is allowed to operate without approval.
- Keep essential spare parts, filters, lubricants, belts, hoses, bearings, seals, fasteners, and consumables available at site.
- Inform the Plant & Machinery Incharge in advance regarding spare parts, servicing, tyre, battery, lubricant, or outside repair requirements.
- Coordinate with equipment operators and drivers to identify abnormal sound, vibration, leakage, overheating, reduced performance, or any other developing fault before it results in breakdown.
- Check all machines daily for:
- Engine oil leakage
- Diesel leakage
- Hydraulic leakage
- Coolant leakage
- Brake condition
- Tyres
- Battery
- Lights and indicators
- Horn
- Safety alarms
- Reverse horn
- Fire extinguisher, wherever applicable.
- Monitor diesel-operated equipment for abnormal fuel consumption and immediately report suspected leakage, misuse, or excessive consumption.
- Supervise outside mechanics, authorised service technicians, tyre vendors, battery vendors, and repair agencies whenever external servicing is required.
- Verify the work completed by external workshops or service agencies before the machine is accepted back into operation.
- Maintain proper tools and workshop equipment and ensure they are kept secure, serviceable, and accounted for.
- Ensure welding, cutting, repair, lifting, jacking, and maintenance activities are carried out safely and with proper supports and PPE.
- Immediately report any major accident, equipment damage, engine seizure, transmission failure, hydraulic failure, or repeated breakdown to the Project Management.
- Assist in maintaining machinery documentation including:
- Registration documents
- Insurance
- Pollution certificates
- Fitness certificates
- Service records
- Warranty documents
- Equipment manuals.
- Maintain cleanliness and good housekeeping of the workshop, repair area, oil storage area, and machinery parking area.
Daily ReportingThe Site Mechanic shall submit a daily Plant & Machinery status covering:
- Total machines available
- Machines operational
- Machines under breakdown
- Nature of breakdown
- Repair action taken
- Expected spare requirement
- Machines due for servicing
- Vehicles due for servicing
- Major observations requiring management attention.
Performance ExpectationsThe Site Mechanic shall work towards:
- Maximum equipment availability
- Minimum breakdown duration
- Timely preventive maintenance
- Reduction in repeat breakdowns
- Proper spare-part planning
- Control of lubricant and consumable usage
- Safe and reliable operation of all machinery
- Proper maintenance records for every machine and vehicle.
- Qualification & ExperienceITI / Diploma in Diesel Mechanic, Motor Mechanic, Automobile, Mechanical or equivalent trade preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in maintenance of construction machinery and commercial vehicles preferred.
- Experience with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, construction equipment, and heavy vehicles is essential.
- Ability to independently diagnose and rectify common site machinery breakdowns.
