Job Description

Job Description: Project Engineer

Location: Site-based (mandatory site residency)

Reports To: Project Manager / Senior Management

Employment Type: Full-time, site-resident

Job Purpose

The Project Engineer owns on-site execution of a hospital project from foundation through handover. This role is the technical and managerial backbone at site — translating drawings and schedules into daily execution, supervising a five-tier site team, controlling cost and quality, and acting as the primary point of contact for the client on all day-to-day matters. The role demands continuous physical presence at site to enable fast, informed decisions and tight coordination across trades.

Key Responsibilities

1. Project Execution & Planning

●      Plan and sequence daily/weekly site activities across all work fronts (civil, structural, finishing) in line with the master schedule.

●      Monitor progress against the project Gantt chart; identify slippages early and drive corrective action with the site team.

●      Coordinate work-front handovers between trades (e.g., structural to MEP, MEP to finishing) to avoid downtime.

●      Ensure method statements and drawings are available and understood at site before work commences.

2. Team Supervision & Coordination

●      Directly supervise Senior Site Engineer, Site Engineer(s), Assistant Construction Manager, Senior Foreman, and Junior Foreman.

●      Assign daily tasks and targets to the team; review output and resolve on-ground execution issues in real time.

●      Conduct daily/weekly site review meetings with reporting staff; maintain minutes of meetings (MOM) for key decisions.

●      Build technical capability of junior site staff through on-the-job guidance.

3. Client & Stakeholder Management

●      Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for the client; conduct regular progress walkthroughs and review meetings.

●      Address client queries and concerns promptly and professionally, escalating only where authority or scope limits require.

●      Coordinate with architects, structural consultants, and MEP consultants for drawing clarifications, RFIs, and design coordination.

●      Manage client expectations on schedule, quality, and scope changes; communicate risks proactively rather than reactively.

4. Quality, Safety & Compliance

●      Enforce quality control checklists at each stage of construction (shuttering, reinforcement, concreting, finishing).

●      Ensure statutory safety norms are followed at site — PPE compliance, safe scaffolding, electrical safety, and housekeeping.

●      Conduct or oversee inspections before critical pours/handovers; maintain inspection and snag records.

●      Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, labour laws, and statutory site requirements.

5. Documentation & Reporting

●      Maintain accurate Daily Progress Reports (DPRs), drawing registers, and site diaries.

●      Prepare and submit periodic progress reports to senior management with photographic evidence where relevant.

●      Maintain records of extra items, variations, and client-approved changes for billing and audit trail.

●      Ensure all site documentation is audit-ready at all times.

Key Result Areas (KPIs)

Key Result Area | Performance Indicator

Schedule Adherence | % milestones achieved vs. baseline Gantt; delay days per activity

Quality Compliance | Number of QC snags/rework instances; adherence to checklist sign-offs

Client Satisfaction | Timeliness and quality of client query resolution; feedback from client review meetings

Cost Control | Variance between BOQ estimate and actual site consumption; material wastage %

Safety Compliance | Zero lost-time incidents; safety audit scores

Team Supervision | Site team productivity; attendance and task-completion tracking of reporting staff

Documentation | Timeliness and accuracy of DPRs, RA bill inputs, and drawing register updates

Educational Qualification

●      B.E./B.Tech in Civil Engineering (mandatory); diploma holders with strong demonstrated site experience may be considered.

●      Additional certification in Construction Project Management or PMP is an advantage, not mandatory.

Experience Required

●      6–10 years of overall experience in institutional, hospital, or large-scale building construction.

●      Minimum 2–3 years in a site-in-charge or supervisory capacity, managing a multi-level site team.

●      Prior experience on hospital or healthcare facility projects is strongly preferred, given specialized requirements (medical gas lines, infection-control finishes, specialized HVAC coordination).

●      Demonstrated experience handling direct client interaction and site-level dispute resolution.

Skills & Competencies

Technical Skills

●      Strong working knowledge of RCC structures, finishing works, and MEP coordination.

●      Proficiency in AutoCAD for drawing review and markups.

●      Working knowledge of MS Project/Excel for schedule tracking and reporting.

●      Understanding of BOQ, rate analysis, and basic quantity surveying principles.

●      Familiarity with quality control standards and testing procedures for concrete, steel, and finishing materials.

Soft Skills

●      Strong team leadership and people management ability across a multi-tier reporting structure.

●      Clear, confident communication for client-facing interactions.

●      Problem-solving under pressure and ability to make fast, sound decisions on-site.

●      High ownership and accountability; comfortable with site-resident working conditions.

Working Conditions

●      Full-time site residency for the duration of the project is mandatory.

●      Role involves extended hours during critical execution phases and pours schedules.

●      Frequent exposure to active construction site conditions; safety gear compliance required at all times.
