Job Description

Trained healthcare professional responsible for drawing, collecting, and preparing blood samples for medical testing, transfusions, or research. They play a vital role in patient care by verifying patient identities, easing anxious patients, and ensuring samples are accurately labeled and sterile.



Key Responsibilities

  • Sample Collection: drawing blood from a vein, finger sticks, and heel sticks using aseptic techniques and the correct order of draw.
  • Patient Care: Verify patient identity, review testing requirements, and communicate clearly to keep patients calm and comfortable during the procedure.
  • Specimen Management: Precisely label, log, and prepare blood samples and other bodily fluids for transport to medical or diagnostic laboratories.
  • Infection Control: Adhere to strict health, safety, and sanitation protocols, maintaining clean work areas and safely disposing of needles and medical waste.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Keep inventory, sterilize equipment, and ensure all necessary phlebotomy supplies (needles, vials, tourniquets) are properly stocked.



Essential Skills


  • Dexterity & Precision: High manual dexterity to perform needle insertions quickly and accurately on patients of all ages. [1, 2]
  • Interpersonal Skills: Empathy, active listening, and strong communication to reassure frightened or nervous patients. [1]
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous organizational skills to prevent labeling errors or sample mix-ups, which can negatively impact diagnoses. [1]
  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding of different blood collection sites (e.g., median cubital vein) and specific tube requirements for various medical tests. [1, 2]
  • Equipment Maintenance: Keep inventory, sterilize equipment, and ensure all necessary phlebotomy supplies (needles, vials, tourniquets) are properly stocked.
